Dell Latitude E6400

I needed to replace my old Dell Latitude D620 and I picked up a Dell Latitude E6400. The specs are as follows:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 @ 2.53 GHz
  • 8GB DDR2-800 RAM
  • 14.1 WXGA+ LED Display (1440×900)
  • 80 GB Intel X25-M SSD
  • Intel GMA 4500HD
  • 8X DVD+/-RW
  • Intel 5300 a/g/n wifi
  • Backlit Keyboard

You’ll notice on Dell’s site that the Intel X25-M isn’t an option. I ordered with the cheapest HD they had an replaced it myself. The reason is that Dell uses Samsung SSDs and they are simply not as good as Intel.

I installed Gentoo Linux on it. I used an Ubuntu 9.04 CD to do the install as I wanted to use ext4. All the hardware is supported except for the fingerprint reader.

I also got an E-Port docking station. It works well too. Just had to do some minor config in the GNOME screen resolution applet.

This new laptop will definitely make consulting engagements much easier on me.
