I’ve released LDAP Administration Tool 1.0. It’s been just over a year in the making. I’ve created a lat-1.0 stable branch and now the trunk will focus on 1.1/1.2. Changes since 0.9:

tomboy-export 0.1

Posted by lorenb on Feb 27, 2006 in gnome

I started using Tomboy recently and it’s been working well for me. My one issue is that there are times I’d like to export to HTML and other times just plain text.

I remember the author posted a workaround but it’s not an ideal solution. I modified the default “export to HTML” plugin and got it exporting text pretty quickly. It wasn’t really difficult as the hard work was already done by the original author. I sent a patch upstream but I never heard anything back.

I didn’t want to have to maintain the patch over time that would be a pain. So instead I re-worked the code to build outside the Tomboy tree. I still wasn’t completely happy because the two export options in the menu looked kind of odd. I went back again and modified the code so that it presented an “Export” menu with a submenu that let you choose HTML or text. Then I just disabled the default HTML plugin.

I’m not really looking to develop it further. It works for me and I’m happy with it. I thought I’d release though in case it’s useful to anyone else.

LAT on Windows

Posted by lorenb on Feb 23, 2006 in mono, projects

So I had some time to kill while I waited for my dinner to arrive and I thought I’d take a look at Mono under Windows. I grabbed a copy of that and a copy of LAT and went to work.

First I had to remove all the GNOME stuff. That was the about dialog, the GConf stuff, and keyring support. Second was to remove the Mono.Unix stuff. I tried to compile and got a couple of reference errors, fixed those and it then it worked.

First time trying to run LAT it crashed. That was just some issues getting the user’s home directory. Second time it worked:

LAT win32 connect dialog

Made a connection, and some stuff worked but a lot of it didn’t. There were a bunch of console warnings about widgets. As you can see below, part of the interface isn’t showing up. Various parts crash due to gettext calls I hadn’t removed.

LAT win32 user view

I’m not really interested in porting LAT to win32 because without the GNOME stuff it’s pretty crappy :). Still it’s pretty cool to see it kind of work across platforms. Good work from the Mono guys!

sussen-applet UI

Posted by lorenb on Feb 19, 2006 in gnome, projects

I was doing some work on Sussen and trying to clean-up the applet UI. Here is a screenshot of the before and after:

sussen-applet UI redesign

The first thing was to get rid of the browse buttons. I just didn’t like the look of them. For now you’ll have to either type the filename/url or drag/drop a URI. In the future, I’d like to use the SexyIconEntry from libsexy to handle browsing.

Second was to get rid of the MD5 hash entry. It was a pain to use because you are not going to always have an md5sum handy. It also doesn’t really provide any security. The OVAL interpreter can’t do anything destructive and the scan is only against your local machine.

Saving the results is optional because a summary is always presented at the end. Speaking of which, I thinking of getting rid of the summary and just displaying the HTML report. That would mean either showing in the users’ browser or using say Gecko#. I have to think about that some more before I do anything.

Third, was moving the check buttons over to the left. Before it looked like there were some kind of options of the result file, which isn’t the case.

The last thing was just to get rid of the seperator at the bottom of the dialog.

I’ve released browser-history-viewer 0.0.4. The tool allows you to examine the contents of web browser history files and export the data. It’s meant to be a forensics tool.

Note: I had some issues with creating an RPM this time so there are no binary RPM package with this release.

Changes since 0.0.3

  • Updated interface; show cache files (or url) in gtkmozembed
  • Build system fixes
  • Fix logic error when calculating dates from IE history file
