Windows XP x64 Edition - Day 2

Posted by lorenb on Apr 4, 2005 in technology

Got a good copy of the nVidia drivers for AMD64 and I was ready to give WinXP 64 a try again. First thing was to re-install Windows because the first install it made the system drive F: and you can’t change the letter afterwards.

On the re-install it correctly detected it as C: and everything went the same as last time. Afterwards I installed the nVidia drivers and this got most of my hardware working. The last thing was the Via soundcard which was also giving me problems under Gentoo.

I downloaded the beta 64-bit drivers for the soundcard but Windows didn’t seem to like it too much. So I still don’t have any sound on either computer. Oh well, I’ll deal with that later. I just took the time to install Visual Studio .NET 2003.

I ordered a KVM switch this morning so I easily switch between boxes. I tried a remote desktop session to the Windows (using grdesktop) and it does work; but with low 8-bit color which doesn’t look too good. That’s probably just an issue with rdesktop or grdesktop.
