Open Source Solaris / DVD Burners
A couple of months ago, Sun was telling people they would create an open-source project around its Solaris 10 by the end of the year.
According the guys at the Inquirer that has now changed:
The current road map is that Solaris 10 won’t officially be available until the end of the year and the open source version will not be around for “several months” after that.
The source of the problems (pun intended) is that Sun doesn’t own all the source code to Solaris. Some of the copyright holders don’t want to open source their code. I wonder if they will just drop the idea like they did with Solaris 8 when that code was available.
Also been thinking about getting a replacement for my DVD burner (NEC ND-2500A) as it doesn’t support Dual-Layer. I wanted to use the DL discs for doing my backups at home. After reading some reviews at Tom’s Hardware and Anandtech it seems my best bet would be to get an NEC ND-3500A. I can get one for about $93 Canadian.
The biggest problem now is the cost of the dual layer discs and their general availablity. Maybe I’ll just wait until the media is more cost effective.
